Title: Library/Media Aide at Shawnee Heights High School

 

Start Date: August 2024

 

Schedule:  8 hours per day / 186 days per year

 

Reports to: Principal/Library Media Specialist

 

Purpose and Objectives of the Position:  The Library/Media Aide assists the Librarian in helping students and teachers make full use of the books, materials, technology and services of the school library program.  To accomplish these tasks, the Library/Media Aide works closely with the staff and administration of the district.

 

I. Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to assist in helping students and teachers make full use of the books, material, technology and services of the school library program.
  • Ability to ensure all activities conform to district guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and community.
  • Ability to safely operate all equipment as required.
  • Ability to work to implement the vision and mission of the district.

II. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials; should be able to lift 40 pounds.
  • Requires stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and turning.
  • Must occasionally work in a noisy and crowded environment with numerous interruptions.    

III.  General Responsibilities:       

  • Ability to perform clerical tasks.
  • Ability to perform routine library office work using a computer and related software programs designed for library function.
  • Ability to provide assistance to students, faculty and parents in locating and using library (reference, online resources, computerized databases).
  • Ability to maintain the appearance and general order of book shelves, displays and work areas.
  • Ability to assist with orientation for new staff members.
  • Ability to assist with individual/small group media skills instruction and book sharing.
  • Ability to assist with student and faculty production activities.
  • Ability to assist with the creation of bulletin boards and displays.
  • Ability to assist with special library activities.
  • Ability to process weeded or withdrawn materials.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with audiovisual equipment, computers, and automation system.
  • Ability to mend and repair damaged materials.
  • Ability to assist in the supervision of students in the library.
  • Ability to assist in preparing and presenting library skills lessons.
  • Ability to assist with computerized and physical inventory processing.
  • Ability to supervise student check-out of books and materials.
  • Ability to supervise teacher check-out of equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to monitor overdue books, and contact parents concerning return or payment.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with students, teachers, parents, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Ability to observe and follow all school policies at all times.
  • Ability to keep current on new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Ability to assist students and staff in using the library technology.
  • Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
  • Ability to perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Library Media Specialist or administrative staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient keyboarding, word processing skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate office machines.
  • Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  • Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
  • Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Must verify good health by passing a physical examination that includes TB and drug test as required.
  • Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
  • Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

Terms of Employment:  At Will.  (See annual appendix).  Salary to be established by the Board.

 

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450 Board of Education’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and this job description.
